Despite the increase in smartphone and tablet usage, the user experience on mobile is still\u00a0lagging behind. Why? A lack of Mobile-First thinking.<\/p>\n

What is Mobile-first design?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

A Mobile-First design approach is when you begin a web project by planning. And designing\u00a0for the mobile experience first instead of the desktop version.<\/p>\n

When you start a digital project by designing for the desktop version. Then make it\u00a0responsive to accommodate smartphones and tablets. It means you are potentially ignoring\u00a0the characteristics, benefits, and opportunities that make the mobile experience so unique.<\/p>\n

Designers have to consider the content that users want to the consumer, the smaller screen. And\u00a0also, the wide variety of functionality that a mobile device can offer compared to a desktop.,\u00a0Such as a camera, gyroscope, GPS, Bluetooth, and Near Field Communication (NFC)\u00a0features.<\/p>\n

Consumers are demanding more from their mobile experiences and they won\u2019t hang around\u00a0if a website or app fails to deliver. 50% of users abandon mobile transactions because of a\u00a0poor experience<\/a>. 61% say if they can\u2019t find what they are looking for immediately on a mobile site they will quickly move to another site, and 40% will visit a competitor site\u00a0according to Google.<\/p>\n

Why Mobile-first design in 2019?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Not only will the consumer demand help drive the focus on Mobile-First design. But also the\u00a0introduction of Mobile-First indexing in 2018. This is where the mobile version of a website\u00a0is considered the primary version for indexing and ranking. If there\u2019s no mobile site or a\u00a0desktop version poorly optimized for mobile, it will affect the ranking of the site and affect\u00a0the organic traffic.<\/p>\n

Progressive Web Apps (PWAs)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

PWAs are becoming more popular as clients see the potential of providing the functionality\u00a0of a native app<\/a> that is easily accessible via a regular web browser, without needing to\u00a0download it from an App store.<\/p>\n

PWAs offer features such as Offline caching (i.e. selected content is downloaded. And can\u00a0then be viewed offline), home screen shortcuts. And push notifications (currently available\u00a0on Android). As well as the look and feel of an app environment. Plus, as it\u2019s just a website,\u00a0there\u2019s no hurdle of an App store, or needing users to sacrifice precious space on their\u00a0device.<\/p>\n

Why PWAs in 2019?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The only obstacle holding up the real explosion of growth of the PWA is Apple. Whilst PWAs\u00a0can be viewed on iPhones, they do not support the Push Notifications as yet, and until they\u00a0embrace this feature. It may hold back the true full potential of the solution. However, if\u00a0more and more users are interacting with PWAs, Apple may not be able to ignore this\u00a0demand.<\/p>\n

Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

What are AMPs?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Accelerated Mobile Pages<\/a> (AMP) are quick loading mobile web pages that serve instant\u00a0content to users. The project led by Google and Twitter back in 2015 was designed to\u00a0provide an open source website publishing technology designed to improve web\u00a0performance.<\/p>\n

Google stores the content and uses a streamlined code to enable the web pages to load\u00a0extremely fast. This stripped back version may mean less content, including images, is\u00a0presented and may compromise your design for speed.<\/p>\n

Google reports that AMP pages served in Google search typically load in less than one\u00a0second and use 10 times less data than the equivalent non-AMP pages In May 2017<\/a>, Google\u00a0reported 25 million web domains were publishing AMPs with more than four billion AMP\u00a0pages published globally.<\/p>\n

Forrester Consulting Total Economic Impact\u2122 study (commissioned by Google) found that\u00a0AMP leads to a 10% increase in website traffic with a 2x increase in time spent on page. For\u00a0e-commerce websites using AMP, the study also found a 20% increase in sales conversions\u00a0compared to non-AMP pages.<\/a><\/p>\n

Why AMPs in 2019?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The true popularity growth of AMPs in 2019 depends on how businesses view the\u00a0importance of serving information quickly. But with Page Speed being an important factor\u00a0for both Google and good user experience. It may be a case of identifying what content on\u00a0a site should be amped up.<\/p>\n

HTTP2<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The HTTP\/2 was created with the aim of providing a faster and more secure internet.\u00a0Originally published in 2015, adoption has been gradual and ongoing with 31.8% of the top\u00a010 million websites supported HTTP\/2 as of November 2018<\/a>. This has been the first update\u00a0since the initial HTTP was published in 1999.<\/p>\n

With the increasingly large and more complex content formats now available. A team of\u00a0Google engineers set out to find faster ways to send content on the internet. They created\u00a0SPDY, a syntax which builds upon the original HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and\u00a0provides the platform for HTTP\/2.<\/p>\n

Benefits of HTTP\/2<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Whilst the technical details of HTTP\/2 can be left for the back-end web developers. It is\u00a0useful to have a basic understanding of what it does and its benefits.<\/p>\n

Put simply, HTTP\/2 reduces load times by improving the way requests. And responses are\u00a0sent between a server and the browser. It does this in a number of ways including making\u00a0connections simultaneously rather than sequentially, compressing and reducing HTTP\u00a0headers and implementing server pushes.<\/p>\n

Page load speed is important for both great user experience and for search engine\u00a0optimization. Therefore any techniques that can improve these are definitely worth\u00a0considering.<\/p>\n

Most browsers will only support HTTP\/2 over HTTPS to help maintain security, but with sites\u00a0like Let\u2019s Encrypt offering<\/a> security certificates, it\u2019s easier to make the switch. But the good\u00a0news is many websites might already be using it.
